RULE 30

Embrace Change

Getting to the top requires courage. Never fear change. If you do not change, you will not grow. If you do not grow, you will not make it very far in any organization.

If you have been in your current job for two years or more, it is time to change. You should really start marketing yourself for your next job at the eighteen-month mark. You should assume that the process of landing your next job may take six months, possibly more. You will need persistence and patience.

Let your boss know you want a change and why. No one will find that threatening. Use the human-resources department. Ask them to help you with your career. Believe me, they will help if they are any good.

Recently a very senior manager who worked in my organization approached his boss and me. He calmly described to us how he saw his own situation. He was positive and upbeat, and he explained how he had been in his current job for two years, performed well, and thought he was likely to be a candidate for his boss’s job at some point. But, he said, his boss had been in his job for less than a year and was not likely to move soon. He proposed that he be moved to a similar job in a different country for two years with a likely return to his home country following this assignment. The experience would enable him to return with a greater skill set under his belt. It made sense to me, and that’s what we did. This probably would not have happened without his initiative. Don’t sit back and wait: You snooze, you lose!

Relish change. Relish new assignments and challenges. Once you truly believe change is good, you will seek it out on all occasions. You will set yourself apart.

Most big companies have an established system that allows employees to see internal employment opportunities across all divisions and in all locations. Postings can be a great way to spot an opportunity for advancement, but proceed with caution:
